What are varicose veins (varices)?

Varices are an expression of vein insufficiency which affects mainly the vein system of the low extremities on the surface. On the legs, a distinct vein scheme is visible, from reticular varicose veins to large varicose veins on thighs. According to recent surveys of varicose veins, every fourth male and up to a third woman suffer from this disease.

In the initial stage, this disease is not dangerous, but especially women are suffering from its appearance of their legs, so they prefer to remove the varicose veins. Other symptoms of varicose veins include pressure in the limbs, feeling of tension, restless legs, swelling, itching, fatigue, visible subcutaneous veins and skin discoloration in the ankle.

At our clinic, we prefer gentle surgical treatment during which it is not necessary to remove damaged veins. After the personal consultation with a patient, a clinical and ultrasonographic examination, our team will recommend the most appropriate treatment and the best possible solution with minimal risk and recovery.

How do varicose veins occur?

Varicose veins arise by a failure of the one-way valves in the surface veins on the legs. They then release the blood back. The veins are stretched, raised and thickened. The lower strength of the congenital vascular walls contributes to this to a high degree, resulting in a gradual expansion and corrugation of a vein.

In addition to genetic predisposition, varices are often affected by sitting and standing, obesity, hormonal influences, pregnancy, trauma or inflammation. This civilization disease is also associated with lack of movement and fiber in the diet.

When can we not perform varicose vein surgery?

Operations to remove varicose veins cannot be performed in patients with acute inflammatory diseases, during pregnancy, in breastfeeding mothers, in patients with lower limb ischemia, in patients with blood clotting disorders and in patients taking blood thinners.

We will discuss everything with you during a free consultation when our specialists examine you and propose an optimal solution for your situation. So do not hesitate to order the consultation.

Options for treatment of varicose veins

Several procedures can be used to treat varicose veins. Conservative treatment combines the use of drugs with the use of compression stockings. However, this method does not lead to the removal of damaged veins, so it is preferable to choose a more radical variant in the form of an operative procedure. Previously the only possibility was a surgical removal of varicose veins – stripping. Today it is increasingly substituted by less invasive removal of varicose veins by laser or sclerotherapy. We will recommend appropriate treatment based on all the necessary examinations.

Laser surgery forvaricose veins

Today, laser-operated varicose veins are considered to be a very gentle method and alternative to surgical treatment, without removing damaged veins. During the procedure, a laser thread is inserted through an injection or a small skin cut into the damaged varicella in short general or local anesthesia, and the vein in the damaged section is closed. Everything is done under the control of an ultrasonic device. The closure of the vein takes only 2-3 minutes, the whole performance including preparation takes about 30-40 minutes. However, it depends on the size of the treated venous section.

In general anesthesia, the procedure is completely painless, in the local anesthesia, the patient only feels an injection for local anesthesia. During the closing of the varices by the laser, it is possible to feel the heat at the point of the laser beam. This can be solved by applying anesthesia directly to the damaged vein.

The great advantage is that this is a painless method and the risk of postoperative complications is scarce. After laser surgery, it is recommended to wear compression stockings for 2 weeks, patients can walk and perform normal work and exercise activities.

Sclerotization of varices is also a very gentle way to remove varicose veins. The specialist closes the affected vein by injecting a special sclerotic material into it, then pulls on a bandage or compression stockings onto the limbs. These are worn for 3-6 weeks. After some time, the damaged and closed veins are absorbed.

The procedure for sclerotization of varicose veins may be performed on its own or as a complement to other methods. Sclerotization is used not only to remove small spider veins but also thicker branches and root varicose veins.

The story of our client Markéta

Unsightly spider veins on thighs and calves troubled me for several years. I have a sedentary office job, but I am actively engaged in sports. The Veins were constantly expanding even though I tried different lotions, alternating shower with hot and cold water, but unfortunately without effect. I’ve looked everywhere, what I could take and how to solve my problem to no avail.

I felt more and more embarrassed for my legs, and people noticed that I refused to wear my shorts and get dressed in swimsuits at the swimming pool. That’s when I told myself, at just 28 years of age, I just had to do something about it. When I ran out of patience, I ordered a consultation at Primed Clinic, where I was explained by the doctor that varicose veins are hereditary in my case, but this problem can be solved easily and painlessly.

A short time later I underwent laser removal of varicose veins, it was finished in a few minutes. I’d been wearing compression stockings for a while, and now I have nice legs with no unsightly veins. I totally regret that I did not decide on this procedure much earlier.

And what about you? How long do you want to be bothered by the unsightly legs? Order a free consultation and resolve your problem just like Marketa!

Varicose veins surgery and postoperative care

After surgery for varices, patients usually have no significant postoperative pain. If necessary, a common analgesic may be used to treat pain. Patients are advised to wear compression stockings after laser surgery for at least 1-2 weeks, after sclerotherapy for 3-6 weeks and after stripping for up to 8 weeks.

A less intrusive procedure does not require any days off, during normal surgery of varicose veins mind a period of 4-8 weeks, during which you will have to stay in home care.

There are no further restrictions in the long-term after surgery, but keep in mind that venous insufficiency is a chronic illness and may return over time. It is therefore essential to follow basic health measures such as weight reduction and long-term stress on the limbs, exercise sufficiently and it is important to stop smoking.
